About

Artist Portrait Inking an etching plate

Creating with Passion

My work is a dialogue between the external world and our internal landscapes. Through various mediums, including linocut and etching, I seek to arrest moments of quietude—whether the heavy silence of a snow-covered park or the stillness of a sleeping animal.

I am drawn to the intricate architectures in nature, from the tangled network of fallen twigs to the skeletal remains of winter teasels. In these forms, I find a meditation on connection and the cyclical nature of life, death, and renewal.

This focus on structure extends to my exploration of the past. In carving the forms of a pylon or a windmill, I am carving out artifacts of a personal history. These are not just nostalgic items; they are symbols of play, rebellion, illusion, and the often-frustrating pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

My practice attempts to slow time to a moment, and is an invitation to look closer at the tangled, beautiful, and sometimes humorous complexity of the world we inhabit and how this is a relfection of ourselves.

My practice is informed by a background in observation and structure. Originally from Brighton, I trained as a biochemist in London and worked as a scientist before my career evolved toward my dual interests in art and counselling. While drawing and painting have been constants throughout my life, I began focusing on linocut and woodblock printing during the COVID lockdown, learning the craft through the YouTube videos of printmaker Laura Boswell.

I was initially drawn to relief printing because it allows for hand printing without the need for complex machinery. Recently, however, I have expanded my practice to include etching, working on the presses at the BIP print studio in Brighton under the expert eye of Helen Brown, print artist.

For me, the physical labor of the medium—whether carving a block or inking a plate—is a meditative process that forces me to slow down.
